Unions Outraged by FBISD Administration Lawsuit Attacking District Mask Mandate

Unions representing working people throughout Fort Bend County expressed outrage at the decision by Fort Bend ISD’s administration today to support a lawsuit attacking the decision Monday by district trustees to implement new public safety measures, including a mask mandate.

“We voted to elect our Fort Bend ISD trustees, and we’re thankful that they followed public health guidance and the clear will of the community in approving a new set of safety guidelines on Monday, including a mask mandate,” said Fort Bend AFT President Glenda Macal. “We’re outraged that the administration has filed a brief today in support of a lawsuit designed to undermine our elected leaders and the will of the people of Fort Bend ISD”.

Attorneys representing Fort Bend ISD filed an Amicus Curiae brief today in support of a lawsuit led by Governor Abbott that would block school districts from issuing mask mandates, like the one approved Monday by Fort Bend ISD trustees.

Earlier this month, unions representing tens of thousands of teachers and support staff from across the Gulf Coast issued a joint letter to area school district trustees and superintendents calling on them to follow public health guidance and immediately issue mandates to keep our schools safe.
