STATEMENT: Unions Condemn Decision by Texas Supreme Court to Resume Evictions in Midst of COVID Crisis

Statement from Gulf Coast AFL-CIO Executive Director Hany Khalil in Response to Decision by Texas Supreme Court to Resume Evictions in Midst of COVID-19 Crisis

“We are astonished by the cruelty of today’s decision by the Texas Supreme Court to resume eviction proceedings in the midst of a historic pandemic. Unemployment has continued to rise in our state, and more people than ever are struggling to afford their rent. Just yesterday, Houston’s $14.4 million rent relief fund was exhausted in only 90 minutes.”

“Tonight, we call on Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and the Harris County Justices of the Peace to extend the eviction moratorium in Harris County to July 25th to match the provisions of the CARES Act. Our local leaders must step in now to ensure no one loses their home due to COVID-19.”
