Gulf Coast AFL-CIO Director Hany Khalil named to National Labor Federation General Board

--

This week, newly-elected AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler announced the appointment of Hany Khalil, Executive Director of the Houston-based Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, to a seat on the General Board of the 12.5 million member labor federation.

Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation Executive Director Hany Khalil said, “I am incredibly honored to have been named to serve on the AFL-CIO General Board. Since the creation of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation six years ago, the unions of the Texas Gulf Coast have worked together to launch innovative and effective projects to build power for working people, and this is a clear recognition of both the progress we’ve made and the opportunities we have on the Gulf Coast to continue expanding access to unions, good jobs, and opportunity to all workers.”

Khalil has served as the Executive Director of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation since it was formed from a merger of five labor councils spanning 13 counties in 2016. A former Houston ISD social studies teacher and Vice President of the Houston Federation of Teachers, Khalil has brought a passion for organizing and community collaboration to the role.

Since its formation, the Area Labor Federation has expanded and deepened coordination among its 92 affiliated unions, leading to its selection as one of just three federations nationwide to participate in the President’s Organizing Initiative, a program designed to provide resources to unions engaging in organizing in strategic industries. The ALF has also launched innovative new programs to grow worker power, such as Build Houston Better, Keep Harris Housed, and has expanded electoral mobilization efforts.

The AFL-CIO’s General Board is composed of the members of the federation’s Executive Council; a chief officer of each affiliated national or international union and the trade and industrial departments, constituency groups, allied retiree and young worker organizations, and eight regional representatives of the state, area and local federation chapters of the AFL-CIO.
